When we bought our house back in 2000, the staircase came with an awful striped rug. Let's see if I can find a picture of it.....
....oh yes, here it is.
That's a beauty, isn't it? I think I could have won an "Ugliest Rug in America" contest with this one.
Around 2003-2004, we removed that awful rug and had this berber rug put in.
Can I just say that I am so over this rug? Ugh. I've wanted to rip it off the stairs for some time now. It looks so dirty and we have had it cleaned professionally, which I thought made it look dirtier, if that's even possible.
I decided to gently mention the topic to my husband. To my shock & surprise, he is all for ripping the rug out. Apparently, he hates it too, and quite possibly, hates it even more than I do.
We know what lies under that berber and believe me, it ain't pretty! As I recall, it's painted....and several different colors at that.
So, I shall begin gathering inspiration, reading tutorials, etc. etc. etc., on painted stairways.
If anyone has any ideas, suggestions or wise advice (or even some advice that is completely unwise,) let me have it, I'll listen to anything right now.
A happy weekend to all. We are on Mid-Winter Recess all next week....yippee!!!

You can do it, I have seen tutorials many times. I think Rhoda from Southern hospitality did hers way back and they turned out beautiful. I am sure if you google it you can come up with info.
ReplyDeleteCountry Living Magazine has lots of photos of painted stairs. I love them!!! I need to email you something that I saw in a book....I'll take a photo and email it to you later on today.

Hi Gina,
ReplyDeleteI'm not much help as my staircase is on hold. I'm trying to decide. If your staircase was already painted I would just paint it again. You can always add a runner.
Dee
Oh how I can relate...my mother, God help her...had sage green sculptured carpet on our stairs when we bought the house from her. With dark paneling...YUCK! I ripped mine out and painted our stairs, then used a graining tool to add texture. If yours are painted, you could try one and use the colors of paint that you like. I promise it'll look like wood grain...I love that little tool! Thank you so much for stopping in on my little blog. Now I'm your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteHere are my thoughts....when I was married and we had a big house, we removed avacado green carpet from the beautiful staircase....we found it was partially stained, so we finished the staining. It was pretty, but a pain to dust every day......then, the noise!!! Kids, dogs, up and down, echoed everywhere....did not know the dogs' nails could make so much noise!!! So, entered the runner with brass rods to hold it in place.....still had to dust the narrow portions that the runner did not cover......after all that expense and time we went back to wall to wall carpet, but in a low nap pile with a diamond design in three tones of beige.....and we were happy!!! I love the look of painted stairs....whatever you do, think of the upkeep....hugs...cleo
ReplyDeleteWow that first carpet was awful. The Berber much better but when it doesn't hold up time for it to go. I love painted stairs also. Gosh there are so many ideas out there you will find the right one I know. Can't wait to see it re-done! Hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteWow! what a nice transformation. It looks a lot better now!! That striped rug sure was ugly!! :) You picked a nice new rug- it looks very nice!!
ReplyDeleteI have no words of wisdom to offer as far as painting them goes...and I'm sure there'd be some upkeep but I personally would rather dust a staircase than vacuum one!
ReplyDeleteThat was some ugly carpet there Gina! Isn't it funny to think someone actually picked that out at one time and was probably thrilled with it:)
Debbie's right Gina go and ck out Rhoda's it turned out beautiful! After you paint it you could add a runner if you wanted. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteGina,
ReplyDeleteI like Berber carpet. Come to my blog, there is an award there for you. Have a great day!
Pat
Oh my goodness! That was one crazy striped rug! I know you will come up with a great alternative! Happy hunting....pinterest should help you out for some good ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever you do, do it quickly! While you and Hubby are on the same page! LOL! Can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteAudrey
I can definitely relate here! but I haven't done it yet either. sigh
ReplyDeleteYou can do it! I love the way you guys both hate it and haven't talked about it! I can't wait to see what y'all do!
ReplyDeleteDebbie
I love painted stairs, Gina. I can tell you I was working on my husband because I wanted to paint the stairs in our old house before we moved. I would have loved to do the dark stain step and the white risers.
ReplyDeleteHi Gina!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!!
Thank you so very much for participating in the blog hop! Wishing you much success in your bloggy endeavors. Excited new follower :)

good luck!! I have this continual problem..and I think you are right...when they get cleaned they look great for a very short time and then seem to attract even more dirt than before!! Painting seems a great option!
ReplyDeleteHi Gina,
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love, white painted risers and dark stained steps...Just like mine. But I have also seen wallpapered risers and painted steps...Super cute too. There are just so many things you can do. I know whatever you decide it will be awesome. Can't wait to see. Have fun.
Much love,
♥Ana
