The Tailor's Granddaughter

My grandfather came over from Italy and was a tailor by trade.
From what I understand, Grandpa could make an impeccable men's suit,
just from taking measurements.

I have always, and I mean my entire life, wished I could sew.

I have alot of anxieties about this whole sewing business.
Some so silly, you wouldn't believe them.
However, the will to sew has become so strong,
I decided it was time to kick those anxieties to the roadside
and just do it!

I am now the proud owner of this:

Oh heaven help me!

I have no idea what I'm doing, but
I am going to teach myself to sew,
one way or another.

Wish me luck!

At least there are a lot of on-line helps these days.
Do you have a friend that can give you some basic sewing help?

Hope this is just the beginning of a great new hobby for you!

  3. Gina, if anyone can do it...you can! My grandmother tried to teach me to sew; but, I was too impatient back then. Now, I wish I had taken the time to learn, too!

  7. That's awesome Gina! This really is on my list of things to accomplish also. I think you're going to do so well at it!

  8. Your grandfather's spirit will help you learn, G!

And DO take those inexpensive classes on beginner sewing at Joann Fabric, or places like that- start your learning on the right foot.

Grats on the new machine, you will do some wonderous things, to be sure!

  10. Oh you can do this!! Yea, it is a pat on the back that you would give it a whirl! If you lived here, I would love to teach you the basics...Basics are all you need for decorative sewing, heck I have not put in a zipper for 10 years! Start with a pillow and try to channel grandpa!

  12. Oh God! This could be really bad for the rest of us sewing challenged people. If you master it that means maybe we could too. Now I'm shaking in my boots.

  17. Gina!
Congratulations on your beautiful new machine. Just in time for Christmas sewing!

Did any classes come with your machine? If so, take a few.

    Thank goodness for the internet!
Almost any dilemma can be worked out through with a key stroke and a click.

  18. Oh girl, you can soooo do this!!! Read the manual and become familiar with the terms used and locate all the parts of the machine. Did classes come with the machine, if so take them...JoAnn's offers classes, they are worth it. I learned from my mom and sister, and then by reading and experimenting and going on my own. You can get all the help you need from the net and from your bloggy friends!!! Good for you!!!

  19. Gina, you are going to do great and will have the most fun. I started sewing at a very young age so I know you can do it. I had help from my Mom getting started and then learned a lot from a Simplicity Sewing Manuel. Before you know it you will be showing off some cute outfit or great looking craft that you have created and you will feel so accomplished! Can't wait to see your first project!-----

  20. You can do it! My mom was a seamstress since she was barely 16 years old, but I am a little challenged when it come to sewing. I wish also I would of taken the time to learn!

  21. WOO HOO! It's gorgeous girl. Don't look to me though... I can only sew a straight line. So far, it's served me fine :)

  22. You can do it! You just have to have a lot of "want to" and "patience." My grandmother in law taught me how to make a dress by standing over me..sew here...now here...but it wasn't until I went at it all alone with sheer determination that I understood what I was really doing. And be sure to buy a ripper...you will need it :-)

  23. Congrats! You'll have so much fun with your machine once you get the hang of it! My grandmother was an excellent seamstress and took in sewing in her early marriage, before 7 kids came along! ha! She could make dresses and most anything without a pattern! I can sew enough to get by, did more when my daughter was younger. But I didn't have the patience she had! ha! Good luck! :)

And I'm getting caught up, so I went back to your previous post, too! The tile looks great on your hearth!!! So glad it worked out beautifully!

  24. I know you will love it. It is "sew" much fun. Hee, Hee, Hee. It does require a little patience and some practice but you are one very crafty gal, I know you will have it down in no time. Have fun.

    Hugs,
    ❤Ana
